The Rusted Anchor defines the idea of a sailor’s tavern. The building is two stories of heavy brick and reeks of smoke and saltwater. The bar is heavily scarred and the tables are made of cheap flimsy wood that breaks easily, as are the chairs. The hearth is made of clay and almost black from residual smoke. The tavern windows are greasy and smoke smeared.
The bartender is a massively built and overweight dwarf named Cudgel Thunderstomp and is renowned for being able to knock an unruly sailor unconscious with one solid punch of his scarred fists. His daughters serve as the barmaids and his wife the cook. The food is good and the ale is considered the best along the docks. The prices are also reasonable and bar fights break out almost nightly. Cudgel’s Grandfather makes the furniture in his spare time out of cheap scrap wood, intentionally keeping it flimsy to cut down on damages when it is broken up.
One of the most bizarre features of the tavern though, is Schlub Thunderstomp, Cudgel’s brother. Schlub was a barrel maker who managed to offend one of the Black Wind Academy Masters. This Master put a strange, strange curse on Schlub. Forcing the dwarf to reside inside a barrel. The cunning dwarf carved out holes for his legs so he could at least move around and an eye slit to see out of. His portly arms also stick out of a pair of holes on the side. Sailors have made it a custom to keep the barrel half full of ale and drop coins in as good luck, as a result Schlub has been drunk for almost 20 years and earns more than enough money to keep the tavern running. When asked why they don’t look for a Wizard to remove the curse, Cudgel just shrugs and replies that his brother wasn’t good for much BEFORE this, and it’s actually improved his disposition.
